REAL ESTATE ON DAUFUSKIE ISLAND

DAUFUSKIE ISLAND FACTS

      DAUFUSKIE ISLAND

The island is approximately 5 miles long and 2.5 miles wide with some 3.5 miles of incredible beach. It is home to The Daufuskie Island Elementary School which provides kindergarten to grade 5. There is also the Daufuskie Island Fire Department which has three full paid fireman, 18 volunteer fireman and two EMC available 24/7. The fire department equipment is 1st class as are the two ambulances.  Care for any major incident is a short Medevac  trip to Savannah’s finest hospitals.

Daufuskie Island is located just over one nautical mile across the Calibogue Sound from Harbour Town. Here you’ll shed the structures of clocks and calendars, discard the frustration of thruways and traffic jams and discover a special island that’s so close yet so different. It is described by the Hilton Head Island Chamber of Commerce as The Paradise Beyond with activities for everyone… golf, tennis, swimming, exploring, fishing, birdwatching, kayaking, beach-combing and biking. We make room for big dreams and quiet courtesy with equal measures of warmth and opportunity for adventure. Daufuskie offers a variety of choices when choosing a place to live or owning a second home.

Islanders actively support the Conservation group, the Environmental group, the Turtle Watchers and the Island Council in addition to volunteering at the Community Farm, the Museum and various community events.

  • Haig Point is a private residential club that has all the positive attributes of a small, caring community.
  • Melrose, includes beachfront villas as well as homes and offers an environment where rentals are available to the public.
  • Bloody Point with its private beachfront homes, very low density and beachfront condominiums has the best beach on the island.
  • Oakridge, the newest property to be developed consists mostly of home sites. Beachfield is a part of the Oakridge Plantation and has smaller lots and about 6 homes.
  • The Historic District with its Gullah heritage has some of the most renowned artists in the low country. The island’s Community Farm just gets bigger and better, how great to now have our own School House Coffee, the Rum Company, the Woodworking shop with its terrific Wine Store, Lucy Bell’s which is a total gastronomic experience, the Billy Burn Museum, the Bloody Point Lighthouse with its own vineyard, Freeport for food, music and fun and a first class Fire Department. Daufuskie Island is often described as a visit to yesterday where vestiges of our history are still in evidence and much has been done to preserve a truly remarkable way of life, often shared with our four footed friends. It is the unique place we, the residents, are proud to call home. Come dip your toe in the ocean, marvel at the peace and quiet and explore the meaning of “place” as you journey to the other side of the water. It is all here….come see for yourself.
